Sarah spent the past hour trying on her limited wardrobe fourteen different ways, searching for the perfect combination. She hadn’t been this nervous in forever. It was a night on the town, but he’d called it a date. And with that came the undefined hopes and expectations any woman would have for a night on the town.

Technically, this was their second date, if you counted pizza in the dusty attic. It would sound boring if she repeated the way the evening had gone to anyway else, at least until the kiss. That changed everything, but to what, was still in question. The romance writer in her saw possibilities, but the realist in her knew fanciful wishes did not make it a fact. Wednesday would come all too soon, and she’d be gone.

Blake knocked on her door sharply at six.

“Coming,” she hollered. She spritzed on a dash of her favorite lavender scented perfume. Sweet and simple, the scent reminded her of her mother and happier years when the two of them dressed up to go out together, before Sarah had lost her to cancer. She pushed the thought aside and pulled open the door.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Gone were the khaki’s and white button-down cotton shirt, and in their place, Blake wore a cream-colored sweater covered by a blue sport coat, matched with blue jeans and cowboy boots. There was nothing geeky about the Blake standing at her door.

“You look stunning.” He leaned forward and dropped a kiss on her mouth. Soft and warm, he lingered for a second.

Turns out she didn’t have to wait for the end of the date to find out if he’d kiss her. The man was certainly spontaneous, something else she like about him. It kept things interesting.

She took a deep breath, breathing in the spicy cologne he wore. As if on autopilot, one hand landed on his chest. “You look pretty good yourself.” The words came out right, but she didn’t recognize the flirty tone of her voice. “I seem to remember I was promised a good time, and so far, we are just standing here.”

“Sounds like a challenge. I’ll have to see if I can improve your image of me over dinner and on the dance floor. I’ve been known to cut a few good moves.” He’d told her they were going to have fun, but he hadn’t mentioned dancing. The night kept improving with each minute.

“I hope that doesn’t mean you think you’re the next John Travolta. That kind of dancing is out of style and would bring your level of refined flair down a notch or two. Or three.”

“You’ll have to see for yourself. Shall we?” He offered his arm to help her down the stairs. “I made reservations at the Garden Delight, if you don’t mind.”

“I would’ve thought he’d be booked solid in advance for a Saturday evening.”

“They were, but Jason goes out of his way for his close friends. Lucky for me, I count as one. Right this way, milady.”

“You’re not dressed for the part.
